‘India’s largest’ | Power giant unveils enormous 4GW green hydrogen project
Indian state-owned power utility NTPC has unveiled plans to build a multi-GW green hydrogen project, purporting to be “India’s largest” yet.
NTPC signed a land lease agreement yesterday (Tuesday) with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), also government-owned, to build a so-called green hydrogen hub on a 1,200-acre (485-hectare) plot of land close to the coastal village of Pudimadaka, in the eastern state of Andhra Pradesh.
If realised, the project would produce 1,200 tonnes of green H2 per day, requiring an estimated electrolyser capacity of more than 4GW, according to Hydrogen Insight’s calculations, and renewable energy capacity of at least 8GW.
NTPC currently has around 3.4GW of renewables capacity throughout India, but is targeting 60GW by 2032. The company has 22GW in its project pipeline.
Green hydrogen produced at the site could be converted to H2 derivatives such as ammonia or methanol for export to international markets, the Indian government suggested in a press release.
The nearest port facilities are located in the city of Visakhapatnam, some 40km away from Pudimadaka.

The so-called Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub, for which no timeline or costing was given, would also incorporate facilities for electrolyser and fuel cell manufacturing and testing.
India, which has been releasing guidelines for billions of rupees’ worth of green H2 subsidies over the past few weeks, is targeting five million tonnes of annual domestic renewable hydrogen production by 2030 as part of its National Green Hydrogen Mission.
However, it has also said this figure could rise to ten million tonnes per year to supply export markets, with up to 70% of India’s annual production capacity used for exports by the end of the decade.
