Cross-Border Renewables: Greece Opens 200-MW Tender

Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEY) has launched a tender for 200 MW of renewable energy projects in Bulgaria and Italy. The tender is open to solar projects with 1 MW capacity and wind schemes with 6 MW capacity. Successful bidders will be able to sell their output in the Greek day-ahead market on a daily basis. The tender will close on March 11, 2024 with the list of winners to be announced on April 25. The deadline for commissioning the capacity for wind projects is 36 months while for solar projects it is 30 months. This initiative is part of a law that promotes the development of energy projects in the European Economic Area.

What Projects Can be Tendered in Greece’s Renewable Energy Initiative?

  • Offshore wind projects of up to 6 MW capacity in Greece are also eligible for the tender.
  • Projects connected to the grid of Greek Transmission System Operator, IPTO, can also be tendered.
  • Technology-neutral competitive tenders for biomass projects of up to 50 MW capacity in Greece can participate in the tender.
  • Biomass projects should be located in the Greek mainland or islands and should be ready to operate within 24 months.
  • Participants can also tender for hydroelectric projects of up to 10 MW capacity in Greece.
  • The hydroelectric projects should be ready to operate within 18 months.
  • Small-scale solar projects with a capacity up to 1 MW are also eligible for the tender.
  • The solar projects should be located in the Greek mainland and should be ready to operate within 12 months.
  • Projects that use geothermal energy with a capacity of up to 5 MW are eligible for the tender.
  • The geothermal projects should be located in the Greek mainland and should be ready to operate within 24 months.
