Semarnat Approves Massive Solar Plant in Tekax with Over 91,000 Panels

TEKAX, Yucatan — Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) has officially authorized the construction and operation of a major new photovoltaic park in the municipality of Tekax.
The massive clean energy initiative, spearheaded by the firm “Photo Horizon,” represents a significant step forward in reinforcing the Yucatan Peninsula’s independent power generation capabilities.
According to the official environmental impact assessment (MIA) approved by federal authorities, the facility will feature more than 91,000 high-efficiency solar panels. Spread across a vast industrial footprint in southern Yucatan, the solar park is designed to harness the region’s intense year-round solar radiation. It is projected to generate roughly 30 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, which will be fed directly into the national grid managed by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
The approval comes at a critical time for Yucatan, which historically imports a substantial portion of its electricity from central Mexico. Beyond local grid stabilization, Semarnat’s authorization is bound to strict environmental mitigation requirements. The developer is legally obligated to execute comprehensive reforestation programs and wildlife relocation plans to preserve the native flora and fauna characteristic of the southern Yucatecan jungle.
Local business chambers and municipal leaders in Tekax have welcomed the development, noting that the multi-million dollar infrastructure project will stimulate the regional economy by creating hundreds of direct construction jobs.
More importantly, the plant aligns with the state’s long-term sustainability goals, helping to transition Yucatan toward a greener industrial model while addressing its growing energy demands.
