AP power sector driving clean energy push: Transco JMD
Vijayawada: AP Trasco joint managing director Suryasai Praveen Chand said that Andhra Pradesh’s power sector is playing a crucial role in advancing India’s clean energy transition and sustainable development goals.
As part of the training programme for the 2025 batch of IAS officer trainees, a special awareness session on the state’s energy sector was conducted at Vidyut Soudha in Vijayawada on Monday under the directions of energy special chief secretary K Vijayanand.
Addressing the trainee officers, Suryasai Praveen Chand emphasised that reliable and quality power supply is essential for economic growth, industrial development, welfare programme implementation, agricultural productivity and disaster management. He stated that electricity has become a key driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
He highlighted the important role played by district administrations in implementing power sector projects, resolving public grievances, facilitating industrial investments and coordinating emergency response during natural disasters.
Providing an overview of the national power sector, he said India has emerged as the world’s third-largest electricity-producing nation with an installed capacity of over 532 GW and has already achieved more than 50% non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity ahead of its climate commitments.
Referring to growing energy demand, he said the State’s electricity requirement, estimated at around 78,000 million units during 2025-26, is projected to rise to nearly 1,80,000 million units by 2035. He said APGenco, APTransco, AP discoms and NREDCAP together manage nearly 21,400 MW of power capacity and provide electricity services to more than 2.03 crore consumers across the State.
Explaining the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy–2024, he said the policy aims to attract investments worth nearly Rs 10 lakh crore and generate 7.5 lakh employment opportunities.
The state has set ambitious targets of 78.5 GW solar power, 35 GW wind power, 22 GW pumped storage capacity, 25 GWh battery energy storage and 1.5 MMTPA green hydrogen production.
He also explained the role of district officials in land acquisition, Right of Way clearances, implementation of PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM schemes and restoration of power infrastructure during emergencies.
The APTransco JMD further highlighted challenges such as rising demand, financial sustainability, renewable energy integration, cybersecurity and climate resilience. He also briefed the officers on AI-based technologies being adopted by AP discoms for predictive maintenance, asset monitoring and improved consumer services.
The programme was attended by trainee assistant collectors, APTransco directors, chief engineers and senior officials.
